I know you’ve all have heard me go on and on about the glory that is Butch Walker and yes, I did catch him for my second time at Slim’s in San Francisco this past Sat, but just before I go into the wonder that is Mr. Walker, I’d like to tell you about two other bands that kicked some serious ass that night…

The Adored started the evening off with an energetic kick to the head. The boys from LA know how to get things started right with songs entitled “Savage Youth” and “the Queen’s head”, blasting at you with full speed ahead attitude. Ryan (lead vocals) is an intense spectacle to behold, with his classic punk convolution like stage presents. His voice is reminiscent of UK punk of old with a hint of old school Cure/ “Three Imaginary Boys” days. Drew (guitar) keeps thing interesting with his speed like 50’s riffs, felling a little Johnny Marr on the track “Queens Head” it’s awesome. His chemistry with Ryan is a blast to watch and keeps your eyes glued to the stage. Max (bass) and Nat keep things moving at a furied pace in the rhythm section. The show as a whole was infections. I constantly found myself wanting to know the words so I could sing along with Ryan and the boys. We got a chance to chat a bit with Max after their set while scanning the merch table. Max introduced himself right off the bat (big points) and asked what we thought of the show. He was happy to see it go really well considering that some of the Bay Area shows they had done in the past felt a little flat. This crowed seem to be a lot more receptive and active. Nothing makes a band happier than looking out into the crowed and seeing head bob and bodies bouncing. As we where talking I just had to complement them on the 45 single on the table (bright banana yellow) and how it was classic and nice to see, just adding more cool points to the bands retro look and sound. I was tempted to pick it up but opted for the full CD instead which I haven’t been able to stop listening to since I popped into my player. The album on a whole is great. I don’t think there is one song I haven’t enjoyed listening too all the way through.

Their new album “A New Language” is one you really want to have in the car, on a jog, at a party or any place there are good times to be had.

So what do you get if you take Iron Maiden and Joan Jett had a baby? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Damone. Now I had heard a little bit about these cats from MySpace, they have a pretty good following and been around the block a few times already. This is their second time touring with Mr. Walker, they’ve also served some road time with bands like 69Eyes, Luna’s Coil, and Bullets Over Contain. The stage show is flash back city for any one who remembers the good old days of classic hair metal rock. Noelle is the spitting image of Joan Jett during her “I Love Rock and Roll” days, with clean crisp voice that lends its self well to the hard hitting rock that the rest of the guys supply. What can be better then synchronized head banging and monitor surfing! These guys and gall put on one hell of a show and it’s all Ms. C and I could do from grinning ear to ear with nostalgia while watching Damone work their magic. We ran into their Bassist, Vazquez , after their set and had a nice little talk about the show. This was there first night with the Let’s Go Out Tonight’s and they seemed pretty excited for what’s to come if the shows kept up with this energy. Vaz did get a chance to sneak off to Bakersfield to catch a Hank Williams the III show the night before. “Bakersfield is kind of pit, but its Hank, so that made it worth it.” Vaz was a sweetheart and stood round and bs’d with us for bout 15 min about other music the shows they had done up till now, and the fact he was excited about getting a chance to do some back-up vocals on their EP “Out here all Night”. These Cats and Kitten from Boston have hearts of gold and keep givin’ on and off the stage. A must see of you ever get the chance.

Last, but never least, it was time for Mr. Walker and the Let’s Go Out Tonight’s to take the stage. The set list not only had the new singles from his latest release “The rise and fall” but he treated some of the old school Marvy three fans with classics like “Indi Queen” and “Cigarette Lighter Lover Song”. It was great Walker showmanship, which helped detract from the rather inebriated idiot cluster we had the misfortune to be standing next to, but we’ll talk more about that in the Ms.C and PoeGrl concert etiquette rules to be posted up in the Forums later on.
There were a few added sumthin' sumthin’s in the line up this go which where a very nice change of pace, i.e.: Sophie and Lindsay, the most hard core back up singers/Dancers I think I’ve seen. They may have broken up the “sausage fest” as Butch so loving refers to most rock shows these days, but I didn’t mean these ladies didn’t have any balls. The girls where also the hosts of the Karaoke sessions in between each bands set, helping each brave participant with back up dace routines and lyric assistance.
The encore included a special camp fire moment with Butch coming down to the floor with the crowd and getting them all completely hushed and sitting (I shit you not, we sat on the nasty ass floor of Slim’s beer bottle boozed soaked floor) as he proceeded to quietly have every one sing the next few lines before bursting back into manic spaze mode. It was an awesome sight to behold. The crowd was at his fingertips and those who where too drunk to pay attention where mocked. Yes my friends, it was a very good show.

All in all the night was an awesome one. We did not get a chance to meet Butch, though he did sneak out on the floor during The Adored’s set and talked with fans and hung out with the cats from Demone for a bit. It was a nice little family pic for anyone willing to spin round and sneak a peek. At the end of the night all the bands packed up their vans and started to roll out. Butch strolled out the back of the venue and stopped for two picks before he and ALL of the Let’s Go Out Tonight’s played a very interesting game of how may band member can you fit into a 98 Chevy Blazer? The bumper dragged over a pot whole as it tried to peel off leaving a lovely little spark show for us stragglers to enjoy. Way to go out with a bang Butch.
