CD Review: Noisettes-What's The Time Mr. Wolf?

What do you get when you mix a blues=raised gutarist, a funky ex-burlesque performer and a drummer who didn't leave the house a a teen so he could play drums for 11 hours a day? In the case of the London based trio The Noisettes you get one of the most striking new sounds of the year. The bands debut full length album What's The Time Mr Wolf? is a soulful collage of punk, jazz, metal and garage rock that is defined by it's refusal to be definied.Vocalist Shingai Shoniwa is the real find here. Her voice switches from confident and brash to a a hesitant purr and seduces you into it;s web. There will be Skunk Anansi comparisons for sure, or maybe Gwen Stefani with soul (and talent).Guitarist Dan Smith takes no back seats though. Often sounding like a rocked up version of White stripes, he weaves through musical genres with reckless abandon. What's funny about this cd is that it's so unique and varied that as each song begins you think "okay, this cd just jumped the shark", but each time they pull through with a chorus that grabs your attention and gets you singing along. The best are the first two: "Don't Give Up" and "Scratch Your Name". "Cannot Even (Break Free)" is a loungified hymn that leads to a crushing and distorted climax. Smith's backing vocals compliment Shoniwa's perfectly throughout the album so the hidden bonus track featuring a deut between the two is the perfect ending to this surprisingly good album. Too artsy for Top 40 and too soulful for rock radio, this band may fall through the cracks. Don't let that happen without giving them a listen!
